It was designed to find exact matches to the fields. It was designed for using data that would normally be busy i.e. find lots of false matches. An example would be a lot number.
An example would be a lot number. If lot 8 was entered into smart search in customer orders, everything with both lot and 8 in:
Invoice Number
Customer Name
Job Name
Job Number (User Defined Field)
PO Number
Telephone 1
Customer Address 1
Sold To City
Job Address 1
Instead |lot 8| would list only those with the exact characters lot (space) 8 in one of those fields.
This is not the purpose of smart search.
Smart search is meant to be a quick way to use the information known to get really close to a record. To find an exact record in some cases requires using the Find.
The pipe was not designed to help with names. Searching for a name in smart search could be done as customer Last or Last Customer or Customer Last and the same list of orders would be found.
