Today's blog will list a few things that can be done to help you improve the control of your inventory.
Daily Procedures
*Use of the picking ticket will ensure that proper warehouse procedures are being performed to
both disperse and return inventory. Information about Picking Tickets can be found here.
*Set and enforce a policy of using picking tickets. Nothing leaves the warehouse without being
properly documented on a picking ticket.
*Ensure warehouse management and support staff follows picking ticket rules. This is probably one of the most important things because if EVERYONE doesn't follow the rules then your numbers will be off.
*Document all inventory discrepancies such as shortages on the picking ticket. Route back to the
appropriate person to make an inventory adjustment.
*Ensure that all roll goods in the warehouse have computer generated roll tags on them.
*Ensure that all items in the warehouse have computer generated item tags on them.
*Periodically check items and rolls for tags between count cycles.
*Enforce a neat and well organized warehouse.
Keeping it Balanced
Trying to keep your inventory balanced is an overwhelming but very important task. If certain procedures are followed, it can make it easier to keep that scale from tipping. Here are a few tips to help you keep any difference to a minimum.
• Perform the balancing after hours while others will not be processing.
• Do not over assign inventory.
• Do not allow override inventory date. (Allows back dating job costing.)
• Do periodic physical inventory counts. (We will be sharing more information on Physical Count in a later blog)
• Limit access to inventory adjustments
• Do not allow job costing inventory that is not costed.
• Regularly check for old not-costed inventory.
• Track inventory adjustments via an in-store order.
• Verify Total Invoice Value before posting to AP from Costing/Receiving
